Armenia – a country in transition

Until 1991, Armenia was part of the Soviet Union. On September 21, 1991 the country declared itself independent.

The democratization process has been underway since then and has not yet been completed.

In the spring of 2018, the Velvet Revolution led to political upheaval. Armenia has three million inhabitants, many of whom are committed young people.

In 1988, a strong earthquake struck Armenia, and the consequences still affect the country. The collapse of the Soviet Union caused an economic crisis.

Furthermore, the transition to a market economy is impeded by corruption, oligarchic structures and the lack of independence of the judiciary.

Notwithstanding the above, Armenia has an excellent education system. The country has numerous universities and colleges.

Next Generation

Armenian students want to help shape the future of the country in a positive way - for democratic and constitutional institutions, for an open market economy, against corruption and oligarchic monopolies.

The Hirschmann Foundation wants to make a contribution to improving the chances of young people with the establishment of a scholarship program.

The average monthly earned income in Armenia is CHF 300. The tuition fees at universities lie between CHF 1,200 and 1,500 per year.

The scholarship program is organized in cooperation with the KASA Fondation Humanitaire Suisse in Yerevan. It is primarily intended to cover the enrollment fee for students at universities.

Partner

The Hirschmann Foundation is partnering with the KASA Fondation Humanitaire Suisse (24, rue Toumanian, Yerevan, Armenia) under the direction of Tatevik Baghdassarian.

The KASA Fondation Yerevan has a network with the countries' universities and ensures that the scholarships are of good quality.

The granting of a scholarship requires recommendations from two professors. Applications can be submitted directly to the KASA Fondation Yerevan.

The Hirschmann Foundation is committed with CHF 126,000 from 2021-2023.
